WhatsApp is giving users more control over how they engage with groups.

Users will now have an options – Nobody, My Contacts or Everyone - to control who can add them to groups. Moreover, in order to add someone who has restricted access to a group, you will now have to send a private message to the user via the invite link which will take 72 hours to activate. Users can access these new features by clicking the ‘Settings’ tab.

This change will address a major privacy issue on the platform, as many users have expressed their annoyance over spamming, unwanted messages and images from groups they were added to without consent. Some group admins are so brazen they have been know to re-add users who attempt to leave, making it difficult for them to leave.

WhatsApp says it will make the new feature available to beta users today while the rest of us will get it in the the next few weeks.

WhatsApp, a Facebook company, continues to act on its promise to fight fake news by rolling out new features week on week this year.
