February 16th, 2016 A judge rules that Apple must help the FBI break into the phone of the San Bernardino shooter, Sayyid Farouk. Apple refuses and Apple CEO, Tim Cook, in a letter to customers, explains that the software Apple would have to build would "undermine decades of security advancements that protect our customers."
February 17/18, 2016 - Taking Sides CEOs of Facebook, Google, Twitter and other orgnisations in the tech space come out to support Apple.
But not everyone sides with Apple.
Feb 2, 2016 - FBI Fires Back The Department of Justice says this is a one time request about victims and justice.
Feb 22, 2016 - Cook Stands Firm Apple's Tim Cook says no way!!! and sends a letter to his employees thanking them for their support, explaining that the data security for hundreds of millions of people is at stake.
Feb 25 - Code is Speech Apple formally responds to the court, laying out its defence. Apple says the court order violates its first amendment rights, claiming that code is speech. Apple says the court order requires them to build a weakened versions of their phone.
March 10 - Govt response - writing code is not freedom of speech the government disputes Apples arguement that code is protected by the first amendment.
March 15 - DOJ Responds The Department of Justice claims that Apple is causing unnecessary panic of privacy concerns. Apple accuses the govt lawyers of not understanding technology. Apple claims the government wants to commandeer Apple to design create test and validate a new OS that does not exist . They even have a name for it - GovOS.
March 21- Court Showdown Postponed The FBI announces that they may have found an alternate way to break into the shooters Iphone without Apples help. Law enforcement agents break into the shooters phone with the help of a third party. The Department of Justice drops the case against Apple.
Apple appears to have won but observers say that with similar demands in dozens of other encryption cases, Apples fight is far from over.
At this stage, the questions on the minds of people in the techisphere are - - who helped Apple? - How will Apple counter the effects of the hack? - What is the future of privacy?
